It is widely expressed in various organs such as the heart, lung, kidney, liver, adipose tissue, gastrointestinal tract, brain, adrenal glands, endothelium, and human plasma. The apelin pre-proprotein peptide potentially gives rise to several active fragments. Apelin 17 is a 17 amino acid peptide fragment corresponding to the sequence 61-77. It is also found in bovine, rat, and mouse.
